Drawing inspiration from forests, oceans and folklore, Vargkvint is a low-key, largely instrumental musical act from multi-artist Sofia Nystrand, based in Stockholm, Sweden.
The debut album ”Brus” is – apart from a young woman’s DIY statement a highly evocative collection of songs, built around haunting melodies and minimal lyrical fragments sung in both English and her native Swedish. Combined with playful arrangements and unexpected instrumentation, it results in something that most closely can be described as a soundtrack to artist John Bauer’s dark fairy tale paintings – as if the celestial tunes of the Icelandic pop music scene had been drenched in heavy proportions of Swedish melancholic mindset. Naming the project Vargkvint (”Wolf fifth”, the dissonant interval occurring in ancient tuning systems) perfectly reflects the core of the project – the constantly underlying skewedness in what superficially appears so satisfying.
